This YouTube Science Experiment Shows How Easily Germs Spread

If you’re still trying to show your kids why hand washing is so important, this YouTube science experiment is a great way to show how germs spread quickly.

YouTuber Mark Rober staged this experiment in a classroom full of third graders, using a glow in the dark “germ” powder to track what happened throughout a regular morning of interactions.

The teacher and one student had the powder, called Glogerm, dusted on their hands prior to the start of the school day.  The teacher then shook hands with three other students and the day began.

By lunchtime, UV light showed that the powder had spread to the desks, the floor, doors, phones, even the other students’ hands and faces!  This was even with regular hand washing within the classroom too.  The Glogerm powder stuck to surfaces and transferred again and again.

As for faces, the Glogerm showed how much people really do touch their faces.  Some estimates say 16 times per hour and all students, and the teacher, had glow spots on their faces.

Handwashing does help and it’s important to make sure kids know that too.  So does being careful regarding coughing and sneezing, as well as staying home when you’re sick and away from other people.
